Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) translates literally to a Trust that 'salutes a child'. Saluting the indomitable spirit of street children without any discrimination based on gender, religion, caste, colour, or nationality. The NGO 'salute' their determination to live a dignified life by providing them with care, affection, health, nutrition, education, and vocational training opportunities to help them to grow into self-reliant citizens. SBT envisions a world where every child experiences a safe and fulfilling childhood, turning their dreams into reality.

Major Interventions:

Preventive Health and Nutrition: SBT addresses the health challenges faced by children living on the streets, who are often exposed to unsanitary conditions and diseases. Regular medical check-ups are conducted at Residential Centres and Contact Points, with individual health cards maintained for each child. A full-time doctor is employed, and specialists are consulted when needed. Vaccinations against Hepatitis-B and Tetanus are also provided, and health camps are organized to raise awareness and support community health. Nutritionally balanced meals are prepared under staff supervision, with additional support for children requiring special diets due to illnesses.

Education and Skill Building: Social and outreach workers build trust with the children living in slums and their families, encouraging them to attend Contact Points where they can access education, healthcare, nutrition, and life skills. SBT offers a multi-layered system of education, including formal, non-formal, and open schooling, tailored to the needs of each child. This inclusive approach helps children overcome past negative experiences with education and nurtures their potential through a supportive learning environment.

In addition to formal education, SBT emphasizes skill-building to help children gain employable skills for a stable future. Vocational training is offered to children above 16 or those who have passed their 10th board exam, with courses aligned to their interests and abilities. Popular courses include graphic designing, film editing, and housekeeping.

Residential Program: Shelter Homes and Centres are operated to provide safe, nurturing environments for children rescued from the streets or distress situations. These centres include homes for both boys and girls, offer comprehensive care such as education, healthcare, and skill-building. Additionally, SBT runs open shelters like Apna Ghar, which serve as transitional spaces where children can receive short-term support, education, and vocational training before moving to a full-care facility.

Restoration and Rehabilitation: With an aim to reintegrate children rescued from the streets into mainstream society. Once a child's family is traced, efforts are made to reunite them, with follow-up support to ensure a smooth adjustment. For older children, SBT provides career counselling, job placements, and a tailored rehabilitation plan, along with emotional support during their transition to independent living. Role models—successful young adults who have been rehabilitated by SBT—visit the centres to inspire children on the verge of stepping out.
