About Us
Shanthi Bhavan – Home for the Aged Destitute, Chennai, a unit of St. Thomas Charitable Trust (est. 1988), is a registered charitable institution providing free residential care to abandoned and destitute senior citizens.
For over three decades, we have delivered:
Free accommodation and daily nutrition
Primary and emergency medical care
Psychological and emotional support
End-of-life care with dignity
Currently, nearly 50 elderly residents are fully dependent on our services. With increasing referrals from organisations such as HelpAge India and the Institute of Mental Health, Chennai, the demand for structured and long-term elder care continues to rise.
The Need
Urban migration, poverty, mental health vulnerabilities, and family breakdowns have resulted in a growing number of elderly individuals being abandoned or left without support systems.
Chennai and surrounding districts are witnessing a steady rise in:
Elder abandonment cases
Homeless senior citizens
Elderly patients discharged from hospitals without caregivers
Seniors requiring long-term assisted care
Our existing infrastructure is operating at near-full capacity.
