About the Fundraiser

Background
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of India's most serious public health concerns, disproportionately affecting people from economically disadvantaged communities. While medicines for TB treatment are available through government programs, successful recovery depends not only on medication but also on adequate nutrition. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, delays recovery, increases the risk of treatment failure, and contributes to higher mortality among TB patients.
The Sundarbans region, particularly Pathar Pratima Block, presents unique challenges for TB patients. The area is geographically isolated, with many villages accessible only through waterways. Limited livelihood opportunities, recurrent natural disasters, poor healthcare accessibility, and widespread poverty make it difficult for affected families to meet their basic nutritional needs during treatment.

Why Nutritional Support is Needed
Many TB patients in Pathar Pratima belong to economically weaker households that struggle to provide regular, nutritious meals. During the course of treatment, patients often lose their ability to work, resulting in reduced household income and increased financial hardship. As a result, they are unable to consume protein-rich and balanced diets that are essential for recovery.

Without proper nutritional support, patients face:
•Slower recovery and weakened immunity
•Increased risk of treatment interruption and default
•Higher vulnerability to secondary infections
•Greater chances of relapse and complications
•Increased economic burden on already vulnerable families

The Need for Fundraising
The proposed initiative under the Ni-kshay Mitra programme aims to provide sustained nutritional support to 50 TB patients from economically weaker families in Pathar Pratima Block. The funds raised will help ensure that beneficiaries receive essential nutritional supplements and food support throughout their treatment period.
By supporting these patients, the project will:
•Improve their nutritional status and overall health
•Enhance adherence to TB treatment and increase treatment success rates
•Reduce treatment default, complications, and mortality
•Support vulnerable families facing income loss due to illness
•Encourage community participation in TB care and recovery
•Contribute to India's goal of eliminating TB as a public health threat

Expected Impact
The nutritional support will directly benefit 50 TB patients and their families, helping break the cycle of disease, malnutrition, and poverty. Improved nutrition will strengthen immunity, accelerate recovery, and enable patients to complete treatment successfully. Beyond individual beneficiaries, the project will contribute to healthier communities and support national efforts toward a TB-free India.
Investing in nutrition for TB patients is not merely a welfare activity—it is a critical public health intervention that saves lives, restores dignity, and creates lasting social impact in one of the country's most vulnerable regions.
