Helping People Help Themselves
  • Crisis: Although children account for 39% of India's population, their interests are neglected and rights are violated. As per Census of India 2011 - one in four school going children is out of school; approximately 10.1 million children in 5-14 yrs age group are subject to child labor; 0.45 million girls <15 years old are married and have children.
  • Programs: 1) Child Rights, Protection and Education: CSI mobilizes children groups in villages and strengthens their Child Protection Committees (CPC). They spread awareness on child rights and services accessible in case of violation by training CPC members, school teachers and parents on laws related to Right to Education, Child Labor Prohibition, Prohibition of Child Marriage, etc. 2) Other: In FY17, CSI conducted programs for prevention of HIV/AIDS among truck drivers through behavioral change communication and other preventive interventions.
  • Outcome: 1) 100,000 direct and 229,000 indirect beneficiaries covered in FY17. 2) ~5,000 out of school children mainstreamed. 2) 88 cases of child marriage prevented. 3) For 12 cases, FIRs were filed and cases registered under the POCSO Act. 4) 163 children groups and 40 health & nutrition clubs mobilized across schools in Haryana and Delhi.
