Crisis: Special schools in India are ill-equipped to cater to individual needs of children with Multiple Disabilities with Visual Impairment (MDVI). Muskan Foundation aims at bridging this gap by providing a nurturing environment that offers cost-effective services and equips parents with the knowledge to sustain the child's development.
About MDVI: Visual impairment with hearing impairment and/or mentally challenged and/or cerebral palsy and/or speech impairment.
Programs: 1) Early Intervention (0-3 years):
Mother-toddler programs are run to develop the
child's physical and emotional skills. 2) Special Education (3-18 years): Individual education plan is designed to develop each child's cognitive, motor communication and daily living skills. 3) Therapy: Offers vision, physio, sensory integration, occupational and speech therapies.
Outcome: Muskan is the only school in Mumbai providing holistic services to children with MDVI. Minimum 1:3 teacher-child ratio is maintained. From 4 students in 2007, Muskan currently covers 123 students for special education and 200+ children for various therapies across 4 Centers in Mumbai. 22 students have been integrated into mainstream schools.
