NGO Profile :
Makkal Villipunarvu Kalvi Sangam (MVKS) promotes sustainable environment and empowerment of women among dalits, tribals and marginalised families in the Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu.

Main activities are:

  • Human Rights program: This program, launched with the Embassy of Netherlands, aims at empowering women labourers who are victims of human and labour rights violations. Training is imparted to MVKS staff, panchayat raj training, workshop for lawyers, training to SHG leaders and legal aid training to women laborers.
  • Children Home: During the year, construction of Grace Children Home was completed. Initially this program had started with 30 orphan children who were victims of fire accidents and HIV/AIDs who were picked up from the streets and were sheltered in a small rented building. As the number of children increased MVKS managed to have its own premises through the support of donors. The Home can accommodate 76 children.
  • HIV/ AIDS Awareness Program: The main thrust of this program is awareness of HIV/AIDS through Peer group educators. 50 peer group educators were identified and given special training in HIV/ Aids. Laborers of 4 Industrial units of Sivakasi were made aware of the cause of the disease, how it spreads, and preventive measures to be taken. Cultural programs were conducted to spread awareness.
  • Scavengers Awareness Program: The program seeks to provide the scavenger community with access to education, economic development, social justice, self-reliance and health through skill development, awareness, counselling, and guidance and rehabilitation program.
  • Free Child Education Program: MVKS provides support to children to enjoy their right to education by providing study materials to students studying in government schools. During the year notebooks, school bags and uniforms were distributed to 50 students. Evening tuition centers have been started in 5 villages.
  • Environmental Awareness Program: MVKS participated in the National Environment Awareness Campaign in which 20,000 tree saplings were planted in the school campus and roadsides by students. The SHG women and students helped in cleaning up the ponds and planted trees around the ponds. MVKS also organized a climate change awareness program.
