NGO Profile :
Sangeeta Darvekar Charitable Trust (SDCT) was founded in 2003 and since its inception has worked on Oral Cancer Prevention in the areas covered under Palghar district. Its efforts have been focused on educating people about the dangers of tobacco use and to prevent deaths due to cancer and reduce cancer incidence.

While working with the tribals in the Palghar District, it was noted that if key transformation has to take place, education should be emphasized. High schools are very far from the remote residences of these tribal students and they end up quitting school, because of the large distance that they have to walk. SDCT provides bicycles to these students so that they can travel quickly without any cost being involved. So far, 356 brand new cycles have been distributed to tribal students. In order to inculcate a sense of ownership and ensure that the cycle is well taken care of, a contribution of Rs1500 is collected from the student.

SDCT also works on other projects like conducting medical camps for the Tribals of Dahanu region, and has recently runs a free computer education center as well. It also runs a Charitable Dental Clinic in Bhayandar East, where thousands of patients are availing dental treatment at concessional fees.

SDCT has made a documentary titled "Tobacco Kills” for creating mass awareness on the dangers of tobacco and its consumption. The documentary’s VCDs/DVDs are sold at a nominal fee of Rs50/- and have intentionally been kept freely duplicable. SDCT also conducts regular lectures and camps in hospitals and makes presentations at conferences and seminars. SDCT also runs a "Mouth cancer detection center" and "Tobacco de-addiction center".
