NGO Profile :
The Association for Sustainable Community Development (ASSCOD) works to empower rural women, develop their families and help them achieve social and economic empowerment. The focus is on working mainly with grassroots, need gap - women and families from deprived sections of society who are especially vulnerable to poverty, social injustice, illiteracy and poor health. Since 2003, ASSCOD centred its approach on the concept of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) organizing women into small groups, encouraging micro-savings and credit, and imparting skills and awareness training to its beneficiaries. ASSCOD is dedicated to working closely with smaller, local NGOs and supporting and promoting their efforts.

Some of its activities are:

  • Micro Finance:  ASSCOD provides micro finance towards entrepreneurship development training, skills training, micro credit, marketing support and insurance services. The micro credit amount has gone up to INR 50,000. Through efficient implementation of micro finance program, 3,148 Below Poverty Line families have come out of poverty. ASSCOD avails funding from other organizations and lends the same to enterprising women in SHG’s out of various schemes of government departments, banks, MFIs etc.
  • Women Empowerment: Around 350 women SHGs with over 6,000 members are supported through training programs on developing skills, promoting gender equality, improving maternal health, and ensuring a decent livelihood for the target group.
  • Health camps: ASSCOD conducts health check-up and eye screening camps where necessary medical advice and medicines are provided free of cost. The organization gave free spectacles to 83 elderly people and treated 24 patients for cataract in FY15. It also repaired two borewells which helped 580 families get safe drinking water leading to a sharp reduction in water borne diseases.
  • Education: The NGO gives scholarships to school children in the age group of 6 to 14 years to reduce school dropout rate. Children are provided with school uniforms, note books and other educational materials to continue their higher education. ASSCOD supports government run schools by providing them with basic furniture.

ASSCOD is accredited with Credibility Alliance under Basic norms and has Special Consultative Status with Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), United Nations.
