Mainstreaming Deaf Children and Youth through Quality education and Skill development
Crisis: Learning Indian Sign Language (ISL) got Roma Roka in touch with the deaf community and she was deeply moved to hear their stories of daily challenge, non-acceptance by society, rejection by their own family, sparse opportunity for employment and a general lack of awareness of sign language. She started the Noida Deaf Society (NDS) with the aim of reaching out to a community that had been side lined from education and employment for years.
Programs: i) Primary Education: Sign language becomes the medium of instruction to teach other subjects and Core Life Skills to children from Nursery to Class V. ii) Remedial Education: Conducted in partnership with Educomp Smart Class, this afternoon program provides education in ISL, Math, English, EVS, Personality Development and Core Skills to students from classes IV to XII. iii) Vocational Training- In order to mainstream deaf youth, market-aligned trainings are conducted by deaf trainers using customized curriculum in English Communication, Computer Networking and Hardware, Hospitality, Work Place Readiness, etc. iv) Employment: NDS has collaborated with many companies across industry sectors to get the deaf youth placed.
Outcome: So far, NDS has impacted 38,150 beneficiaries indirectly & directly; 2,400+ deaf students have been placed in jobs; 6,000+ persons sensitized across companies; 22 deaf schools opened their doors to accept a Deaf Teacher as part of their staff.
