100,000+ children reached in 270+ construction sites
Crisis: Over 11 million Indians work in the construction sector. The construction workers' children (over 30,000 in Mumbai) are vulnerable and frequently suffer from malnutrition, undernourishment, accidents on the sites and other health problems. Since the last 44 years, MMC runs 15-25 Day Care Centers every year on construction sites and other disadvantaged communities to reach out to these children with comprehensive programs.
Programs: a) Education Program: Each Center has a creche for 0-3 year olds, a pre-school for 3-6 year olds and after-school support for 6-14 year olds. b) Nutrition Program: Each child is served breakfast, mid-morning snacks, lunch and an afternoon snack, ensuring a daily calorie intake of 800 kcal and protein intake of 35 gm. c) Health Program: Regular doctor visits are organized to monitor the children's height, weight, etc. Eye and dental health camps are also conducted periodically.
Outcome: a) 4,000+ children reached annually and 1,000+ daily. b) 60% children served are <6 years old. c) 79% of the children stay for <6 months. d) School enrolment rate increased from 32% in FY12 to 79% in FY16. d) 80% children served showed improvements in health in FY15-16. e) Children who attended MMC for >6 months scored 6% higher than the others in FY15-16.
