Ashray-Akruti is a non-profit working for people with hearing impairment in Hyderabad since 1996. They believe in building skills of the hearing disabled to enable them to live independently, participate in daily life, look forward to being fully integrated with society and considered as citizens who contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Their activities include:

  • Special Education: Ashray-Akruti manages a School with a residential facility for children with hearing impairment, which emphasises on special education following the State syllabus. The students are provided nutritious food and a convenient transport facility. They focus on speech training so that students are less dependent on sign language, work with special educators to capitalise on residual hearing powers, and encourage early intervention for young children so that a child gets access to regular Auditory and Speech Therapy. They have achieved a 1:8 teacher-student ratio over the years, and promote active participation by mothers for ensuring consistent learning in classrooms and also homes. Salient features of the School include full-fledged Computer and Science Laboratories, spoken English coaching, pre-vocational skills trainings, and distribution of free hearing aids to the students. The organization provided special education to 338 hearing impaired children in FY15, and 92 students availed of their residential facility.
  • Training Unit: ‘Indian Multi Media’, a 6-months course has been set in accordance with the trending market demands for the hearing impaired youth. This offers interactive, customizable, and measurable training environment for disabled children. Moreover, the well-designed course comprises of trainings in Adobe Photoshop, After effects, InDesign, 2D and 3D Animations, Corel draw, Flash and also in soft skills like communication skills, personal grooming and spoken English.  Besides, the students get exposure visits to Animation and production companies. So far, 45 hearing impaired youth have been trained and placed in different animation companies.
  • Community Ear Health Program: This is Ashray-Akruti’s new initiative, which supports and assists Government school children to access ear care and also raise awareness about better ear and hearing care. The project team conducts free ear-checkup camps. In FY15, 637 children from one school were screened.
