Academic, material, and social support to 'Nanhi Kalis'
Crisis: GOI statistics reveal that only 3 off 10 girls who enter Class 1 complete Class 10. At primary school level, >45% girls dropout and this increases to >73% by Class 10. Project Nanhi Kali, the flagship program of the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, was started in 1996 to provide quality education to socially and economically underprivileged girls in India.
PThe Project aims to bridge the learning gap in government schools and curtail dropouts among girl students. The intervention has three components - i) Academic Support: after-school support class for concept-based learning. ii) Material Support: schoolbags, shoes, books, uniforms, hygiene material and other essentials. iii) Social Support: parent and community engagement for increasing sensitivity on gender issues and importance of girl child education.
Outcome: i) Average attendance of 83%. ii) Dropout rates curtailed to <10%. iii) Learning outcomes increased by 10-20 percentage points year-on-year. iv) The project currently supports 120,000+ Nanhi Kalis across 10 states in India.
