A book in Every Child's hand
  • Crisis: By the time a child passes Grade 2 in India he/she is expected to read and form basic sentences. But the reality is slightly different because of several reasons one of the most important being, almost no reading material is available in schools other than textbooks. There is also no access to books in different mother tongue languages which makes it difficult to practice reading and writing.
  • Programs: Pratham Books was founded with a sole mission to introduce the joy of reading for every child in India. They have their books published in more than 100 regional languages. Currently they have 4 on going initiatives - i) Publishing 'Books' for under-served children. ii) Mini storybooks called 'Story Cards' which is cost efficient and can be used by larger organizations. iii) 'Story Weaver' is a digital platform for kids to access any kind of reading material easily. iv) The 'Reading Champion Movement' is a self-organized, volunteer driven story telling workshop that can be conducted in their neighborhoods.
  • Impact: 'Story Weaver' has seen a growth of 173% in the past year in the number of users. Pratham Books have distributed 1,400,000 story book in various mother-tongue languages across India. Through their 'Donate-A-Book' initiative the organization hosted 89 library campaigns from which 45,000 children benefitted in 17 different states.
