Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM) was established when a few likeminded people wanted to do more. Out of the brain storming of these individuals, the aim to "Broaden the vision of nature conservation" was taken up as the mission of this organization. Until date, SNM has been continuously striving to live up to the slogan. They have built a strong base of volunteers spread across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra.
Due to the harvesting of marine turtles and their eggs, marine turtles are now endangered in every region of the planet. SNM has protected more than 800 nests and over 35,000 hatchlings into the sea. In its first year, SNM safeguarded 50 Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) nests and released 2734 hatchlings in Velas in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district.
SNM sent awareness letters to the village heads, Police Patil and Dispute free village villages across the district. Specially designed leaflets in Marathi language were distributed to 3255 individuals. SNM had developed a book "Pangolins on Coins and Stamps of the World". Questionnaire survey was conducted in 178 villages and collected a baseline data on the presence of the Pangolin in Sindhudurg district.
In Chiplun city and the nearby villages, a programme was run to raise awareness of all forms of hazardous, non-corrosive, and decomposable garbage. A trial waste management project was launched in the "Kiran Vihar Sankul" building, which contains 69 apartments. Wet garbage was collected daily from each apartment in the complex, and composting was initiated. The dry trash in the package was also divided into categories including plastic, glass, cloth, and paper, and stored there. Sorted garbage was then delivered to the factories and concerned dealers for proper disposal.
SNM had explored the region intensively and found few places to established Home- stay ecotourism in the region to promote eco-tourism and wildlife conservation through sustainable living. SNM established home stay and trained local youngsters to be a nature guide in Choravane,Veer and Panhali village.
