Six years ago, Rita and Ashok* got married in a room full of their friends and family in Mumbai. Their wedding was filled with blessings and joy, and they flew off to Koh Samui to celebrate their honeymoon.
Rita and Ashok are just like the thousands of couples who get married every day. However, there was one big difference.
Giving back was important to both of them. Music and sports were a big part of their lives, and they wanted to make this special occasion even more special by making these causes a part of the most important day of their lives. They each picked a charity they liked, and set up a Charity Registry for their wedding together. They asked their loved ones to donate to a cause close to their heart instead of giving them wedding gifts. All of the contributions were then divided equally between the two NGOs.
A Charity Registry is a concept that’s been in use worldwide. Often people ask for blessings only, or are clear about not accepting gifts on their wedding day. While Charity Registries began with weddings, people are now using them liberally for birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, festival celebrations, and any special occasion where there is a lot of gifting and spending on gifts.
You can set up your own Charity Registry on HelpYourNGO! On our website, you can set up a Registry to commemorate the upcoming festive and gifting season, birthdays, anniversaries…any cause that’s close to your heart. Your special day is shared with people you know, and it’s even more special because it’s made someone else’s life better!
