Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Nelson Mandela
India's public school system reaches 250 million children through 1.5 million schools. However there are significant inequalities in access to education as far as income, gender, social group and geography are concerned. Almost 50% of students drop out before 5th grade, and 80% by the 8th grade. Overall, the outcomes in education are demoralizing: insufficient improvements in basic skills as demonstrated by Pratham's ASER and PISA reports, delivering unemployable youth, huge dropout rates and lack of progress in encouraging early childhood education. However there are non-profits that are diligently working to change these numbers. We believe that educated children will help their communities move out of poverty!

Vidya Poshak
Based on the 10th class results, students are short-listed for home visits (only using volunteers) to assess the extent of financial difficulty. Thereafter depending on the merit and home visit reports, the final list of eligible students will be prepared for assisting them with scholarship, books and training. The facilitators with the help of local volunteers and well wishers will organise the financial assistance disbursement programmes in selected locations. On an average every year more than 1000 house visits are made covering 600 villages/small towns from 10 districts of Karnataka.

BREAD Society
BREAD Society helps set up libraries (no text books) in government schools to encourage reading. More than 750 libraries have been set up since FY10 reaching 3.5 lakh students. Students are selected to manage the library to help develop team spirit, leadership, and management skills. Students are encouraged to submit write-ups as this indicates that they have actually read the book. BREAD awards prizes annually for best write-ups based on certain participation levels at each school. To motivate more students to do write-ups, those getting prizes once will not be eligible for prizes again. The NGO has no paid employees.
