The Village Development Centre, or VDC, works for the underprivileged and marginalized populations, focusing its efforts on children, women, unorganized laborers, and small farmers in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu. VDC mobilizes poor households, raises awareness, and motivates community members to achieve empowerment through planned, continuous interventions, fostering constructive relationships within its project area. Major Interventions: Women's Empowerment and Livelihood: It promotes Self Help Groups (SHGs) and provides essential training on self-management practices. It majorly helps women with vital micro-credit and loan facilities to promote entrepreneurship. This training includes bookkeeping, financial management, and regulating internal loans, enabling women leaders to manage their own accounts and records. VDC also facilitates livelihood opportunities by conducting skill training, such as door mat weaving, to help women establish micro-enterprises and earn income. Child Education and Development: VDC runs Child Learning Centers (CLCs) to support slow learners and first-generation learners, helping them continue their school education. The centers prevent school dropouts and enhance academic performance by providing learning and play materials and conducting evening classes. VDC also organizes Children's Clubs, which orient children on critical issues such as child labor, child marriage, and child rights violations. Community Health and Awareness: VDC conducts public health initiatives, including focused health education for adolescent girls and women on promoting health and hygiene habits, particularly hand washing. It actively addresses social issues by conducting awareness camps for women and children on the evils of alcohol consumption, aiming to mitigate domestic violence and support behavioral change within families. VDC engages with farmers by organizing training programs on sustainable practices, such as organic farming cultivation. It also runs environmental awareness campaigns on themes like waste recycling and restoring the earth, encouraging community members to avoid plastics and mitigate pollution. |
