The Akshaya Patra Foundation strives to eliminate classroom hunger by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Programme. It provides nutritious meals to children studying in Government schools and Government-aided schools. It also aims to counter malnutrition and support right to education of children hailing from socio-economically challenging backgrounds. It visions that no child in India should be deprived of education because of hunger.

Mid-day meal (MDM) is a wholesome freshly-cooked lunch served to children in government and government-aided schools in India. It aims to

  • Avoid classroom hunger
  • Increase school enrolment
  • Increase school attendance
  • Improve socialisation among castes
  • Address malnutrition
  • Empower women through employment

The menu is designed and implemented after taking into consideration various factors, including regional palate, taste, and flavours. Akshaya Patra operates on a public-private partnership (PPP) model and partners with state governments by setting up a kitchen, carrying out the day to day operations of preparing meals and maintaining its running costs.

Locations where factors like unfavourable geographical terrain and improper road connectivity don’t support the construction of large infrastructure, decentralised kitchen are set up. Decentralised kitchen units are run by women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the guidance and supervision of Akshaya Patra’s kitchen process and operations module.
